Prevention

In modern medicine Prevention is some sort of art. Prevention is a sophisticated process in which people (specially those with known risk factors or in close contact with environmental disturbances) are treated to prevent certain diseases. It has been proved in majority of cases Prevention is time effective and cost effective. It doesn't only prevent diseases but also it can improve quality of life and life expectancy. 

Based on the time of intervention, Prevention divided in 3 major levels:

  • Primary Prevention: The purpose of this level is prevent the development of a disease in a healthy person. Majority of health awareness are in this category like: Immunization, Promoting Healthy Diet, Smoking Cessation, and exercise.

  • Secondary Prevention: The purpose of this level is detecting and addressing an existing disease at the early stages before signs and symptoms appear. The goal of Secondary Prevention are reducing complications and prevent worsening of the disease. Some examples of Secondary Prevention are: Treatment of Hypertension to prevent a Cardiovascular disease or all Cancer Screening Tests.

  • Tertiary Prevention: The purpose of this level is decreasing complications of an existing disease to improve quality of life. Some examples of Tertiary Prevention are: Insulin therapy in Type II Diabetes or Surgical Removal of a Cancer.

Prevention has a very important role in Naturopathic Medicine and it considered as one of the major modalities of Naturopathic Medicine. a Naturopathic Doctor uses following tools for all three levels of Prevention:
