Clinical Nutrition

"Let food be your medicine!" (Hippocrates)

This proposition is still the guiding principle in the Naturopathic approach to nutrition. Nutrition is the building block of the body's tissues, while proper levels of nutrients are essential to normal physiological function. Now we clearly know the relation between the quality of diet and diseases. With a proper quantity and quality of your diet you can not only prevent some diseases but also can cure them and increase your quality of life.

A healthy diet is the primary factor for daily activities, physical and mental health. As a Naturopathic Doctor I strongly believe "You are what you eat!". Your body in whole built based on what you consume. A healthy diet and lifestyle improve your overall health and help you to prevent certain diseases including obesity, cardiovascular disease, gastrointestinal problems, diabetes mellitus, musculoskeletal diseases and even mental issues.

Based on activity level, body mass and other factors, everyone needs certain amount of daily energy and this energy achieved by daily intake. in general recommended average daily energy intake are:

  • Women: 2000 kcal

  • Pregnant women: 2300 kcal

  • Men: 2500 kcal

Foods divided in 3 categories: Macro-nutrients, Micro-nutrients and Water.

Macro-nutrients are those food which we need in large amounts like: Carbohydrates, Lipids, and Proteins. These mainly produce our energy.

Micro-nutrients are those nutrients which needed by the body in lesser amounts but have important role for body functions, like: Vitamins and Minerals. These have important role in body functions like metabolism.

Clinical Nutrition and the therapeutic use of foods is one of the most important tools of a Naturopathic Medicine. A Naturopathic Doctor can evaluate and treat allergy, food sensitivity and intolerance, imbalance, deficiency and excess which are all example of unhealthy diet to reach your goals and prevent certain acute and chronic diseases!
